1 Mourinho walks out against the club he made history with
Real Madrid vs Inter on night one is about as good as Matchday 1 gets. The Madrid coach faces the side he won this very competition with in 2009/10 — treble and all. Add Kylian Mbappé sitting on 70 Champions League goals (one behind Raúl) and Thibaut Courtois closing in on his 100th appearance in the competition, and the Bernabéu will be rocking.
2 Anfield, under the lights, against a Simeone low block
Liverpool have drawn two of their first three league games and are still searching for last season’s rhythm. Atlético arrive happy to sit deep, frustrate, and strike from set pieces. It’s the classic European arm-wrestle — patience versus pressure.
3 Arsenal take a perfect record to Naples
Three wins from three, six scored, one conceded. Havertz equalised against his old club Chelsea on Sunday and Ødegaard won it early in the second half — the champions are not easing into the season. The Stadio Diego Armando Maradona is the toughest away day in Italy, though, and Napoli counter at speed.
4 Porto’s European pedigree meets the Premier League leaders
This is Porto’s 28th campaign at this stage of the competition — only Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern have more. But they’ve beaten English opponents just twice in their last 16 tries. City, meanwhile, are top of the table with seven scored and two conceded, and a rebuilt midfield to show off.
5 Manchester United need this one
United are 11th after throwing away a late lead at Everton on Sunday — 2-2, with the equaliser arriving in the 96th minute. Old Trafford against Sabah is the kindest fixture on their fixture list, and anything less than three points will be talked about.

Forget groups. All 36 clubs sit in one table and play eight matches — four at home, four away — against eight different opponents between September and January. Finish in the top eight and you go straight to the last 16. Finish 9th to 24th and you face a two-legged play-off to get there. Finish 25th or lower and your European season is over. It means every single matchday has something riding on it, which is why Matchday 1 already feels like a big one.
